Urgent: assessment received

Got a URA assessment? The clock is already running.

You have 45 days from the day you receive an assessment to object. After that, the amount usually stands. Send us the letter today. We'll tell you your exact deadline, your options, and what you may have to pay first.

Who this is for
  • You have received an assessment or an additional assessment from URA
  • URA has decided your objection and you're thinking about the Tax Appeals Tribunal
  • URA has started collecting, for example through your bank or your tenants, and you dispute the amount
The problem

The deadlines are short, and they don't move.

Tax disputes in Uganda run on fixed dates. Miss one and you can lose the right to argue, even if URA's figure is wrong.

  • 45 days to object, counted from the day you receive the notice of assessment.
  • 30 days to apply to the Tax Appeals Tribunal after you are served URA's objection decision.
  • 30% first. Before the Tribunal hears you, you usually have to pay 30% of the tax assessed, or the part you don't dispute, whichever is higher. In 2026 the High Court accepted that assets URA has already seized can count towards it.
  • ADR is an option. After an objection decision you can ask URA to settle through ADR (alternative dispute resolution: a negotiated settlement instead of a hearing).

Each route costs a different amount of time and money. Choosing the wrong one, or choosing too late, is how a winnable dispute gets lost.

If it's left alone

What it can cost you

  • The objection window closes and the assessment becomes final
  • Cash tied up in a 30% deposit you didn't plan for
  • Interest building on the full amount while you decide
  • Collection through your bank account or tenants
  • Going to the Tribunal when ADR would have settled it faster
How it works

Three steps

01

We read the letter

We confirm what URA has assessed, on what basis, and the exact date your clock started.

02

We map the dates and the money

You get every deadline as a calendar date, the deposit you may need, and the cost of each route.

03

We file, or hand over cleanly

If you go ahead, we draft and file the objection or ADR application, or prepare the Tribunal file with your advocate.

What you get

What you receive

  • Your deadlines as calendar dates, in writing
  • The deposit you may need, and ways to meet it
  • Objection, ADR or Tribunal: our recommended route and why
  • A list of the evidence to gather now
Fees

Your deadlines, then a written quote

These are specialist reviews, so the fee depends on the documents, the years and the amount at stake. You see the written quote, valid for 14 days, before any work starts.

Deadline work: work forced inside a statutory deadline is priced at 1.25 times the normal fee. We tell you before we start.

Common questions

FAQs: URA Assessment Deadline

Not always. The law lets URA accept a late objection where you had a reasonable cause for the delay. Send us the letter and the dates, and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth trying.

The 30% rule is tied to applying to the Tax Appeals Tribunal, not to lodging the objection itself. We check where you are in the process and what is payable now.

ADR is a negotiated settlement with URA. You must apply within 7 days of receiving URA's objection decision, and the Tribunal deadline (30 days) keeps running alongside it, so both are planned together.

We prepare the tax case: the computations, the evidence and the arguments. Where an advocate must appear, we work alongside yours or one of our partner advocates.

Send the letter on WhatsApp. Deadline cases are handled first. Work forced inside a statutory deadline is priced at 1.25 times the normal fee, and we tell you that before we start.
